Tools for you

Our three years of research found that although older people are frequently told downsizing is the best pathway to a comfortable home in older age, many want to stay where they are or want to consider a range of options. It is not so much downsizing that is important, but finding the best fit, or rightsizing.

The research showed that while older people wanted to be actively involved in decision making about their home-based needs, the decisions were often complex and information to help support decisions was hard to find or confusing to work through. Information was often focused on an immediate need or problem not long-term planning.

As a result the research team have worked with older people and organisations that support older people to develop a practical decision support kit –  My Home, My Choices.

My Home, My Choices – Ngā Kete o te Whare

My Home, My Choices is an information toolkit to help Tool kit imagepeople when considering whether to stay in their current home, or to move.  The Toolkit is interactive – the user decides how to use it – it provides people with information and ideas to help them explore their needs, and priorities and whether their current situation meets those needs

Some comments from older people who tested the finished tool include:

“This is an unbiased tool that gives choices.”

“The links to the websites is great … information provided was invaluable and I will be looking at this section in depth”

The hard copy kits from the original print run have all now been sold or distributed.  You could try contacting your local branch of CAB or Age Concern who may have a reference version in hard copy that you can view.

The toolkit can also be used free of charge as an interactive webpage by clicking this link – web version of tool.

In 2021, with the assistance of Te Tari Kaumātua, the Office for Seniors we updated the web version of the tool. The link above will take you to the updated version.

If you have any questions about the toolkit and how to use it, the research in general, or you would like to talk to us about running a workshop on the toolkit for your group or organisation please feel free to contact us on 0508 427372 or email ruth@cresa.co.nz
